By J. Skinner

Derek Drouin traveled to Ostrava, Czech Republic this past week to compete for the Canadian National Team at the World Youth Championships in Athletics. This meet displays the most elite aged 17 and under athletes in the sport of track and field from all around the world. Drouin competed in the qualifying rounds this past Thursday where he jumped a personal best height of 2.07m to qualify for the final as the number one ranked jumper in the world based on having no misses throughout the entire competition. Drouin competed in the final on Saturday where he again was clean through 2.04m and took three excellent attempts at a new personal best of 2.08m but could not clear the bar. Drouin is a two-time OFSAA medalist in the high jump and also excels at the sprint hurdles and the multi-events. Derek will be competing this coming weekend at the Ontario Legion meet in Ottawa where he hopes to qualify for the National Legion Camp in New Brunswick in 4 weeks time. Derek also looks to bring home the gold at the National Junior Championships in Abbotsford, British Columbia in two weeks time where he will be competing in the 110m hurdles and the high jump. Due to self-funding costs ($3000) to the World Youth Championships, the Sarnia Athletics Southwest Track and Field Club is looking for community sponsorship/donations to offset the cost for Derek to attend the National Championships in B.C.
