May 25 - Sarnia Athletics Southwest alumnus Derek Drouin has been named the Big 10 freshman athlete of the year. Drouin, from Indiana University, won the high jump at the Big 10 championships, held at Ohio State Univ., last weekend, with a personal best leap of  2.19 metres. He also qualified for this weekend's NCAA Mideast regional meet in Louisville, Kentucky.

Also competing at the Big 10 championships, Maggie Mullen, a freshman at Ohio State, was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 43.25 metres. She has also qualified to compete in the Mideast regional in Louisville.

Other local athletes with strong recent track and field perfomances include University of Buffalo freshman Casey Garbaty, fifth in the javeling at the MAC Championships held at the University of Akron. Garbaty, with a throw of 59.65 metres, qualified for the NCAA East regional, this weekend in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Texas State University senior Andy Ysebaert was third in the shot put at the Southland Conference Championships, with a personal best of 17.06 metres, qualifying him for the Midwest regional in Norman, Oklahoma this weekend. Ysebaert was also fifth in the discus with a throw of 49.80 metres.

And Bournemouth University student Jillian Drouin was first in the high jump at the British University Championships, with a jump of 1.81 metres. She was also third in the long jump, fifth in the 100m hurdles and seventh in shot put.
