Day 2 of the Pan Am Juniors in Windsor was very successful for
Sarnia Athletics Southwest and Canadian teammates Lydia Willemse and
Jillian Drouin.
Lydia Willemse established a new
Canadian Junior Record (19 years and under) in the women’s 3000m
steeple with a time of 10:53.48 (former record 10:54.17 by Meredith
McGregor, BC, 2004) to place 5th. Lydia was in medal
contention through 2000 metres in 6:55. 3 weeks earlier Lydia had
won the Canadian Jrs in 6:48 beating the former national junior
record of 7:00, so the pace of the race was very solid.
Unfortunately since she was running the 3km steeple for the first
time, the additional 1km was a big challenge this time.
Lydia’s new university coach from
Florida State, Bob Braham, was in attendance and was impressed with
her efforts of going out with the leaders and putting it on the
line.
Also in attendance was Lydia’s high
school coach at St. Christopher’s, Denise Kohlmeier, who noted the
improvement Lydia has made over the past 18 months to progress into
Canada’s best junior aged steeplechaser.
Jillian Drouin took the bull by the
horns on day 1 of her heptathlon (7 events) competition by setting
personal bests in each of her first 3 events… 100 metre hurdles,
high jump, and shot put. Her personal best in the high jump of
1.75m is really significant since prior to taking up the heptathlon
Jillian was a national team high jump specialist. She ended the day
with a close to personal best time in the 200 metres to finish day
one of the heptathlon in second place overall. Seeded 4th
coming in, Jillian has really stepped up her performance level. Day
2 is going to be very exciting!!
