TORONTO- The Sarnia Athletics Southwest Track Club’s Junior Women’s Team competed this past weekend at the Canadian Cross-Country Championships in Toronto. The team competed in the 20 years and under age class for females and placed 7th as a team over a race distance of 5 km. Leading the way for the local club was Marie-Louise Asselin, who finished in 19th place out of the 155 runner field in 18:39. Asselin was just 4 places and 5 seconds off qualifying for the Canadian team that will compete in France at the World Championships in March. Following Asselin in 26th place was Lydia Willemse in 18:47. Willemse, a Canadian Junior team member in the 3000m steeple was competing in her first national cross-country championship. Other Sarnia finishers included Carly Gill (19:51/75th), Laura Gill (20:26/96th) and Courtney Workman (20:35/99th), all also competing in their first national championships. The Sarnia Athletics Southwest Team’s national championship aspirations where denied when World Junior 3000m Steeple junior team member Claire Percival, was unable to finish the national cross-country race and NCAA standouts, Alyson Kohlmeier of the University of Michigan and Jessica Crate of Arizona State University both opted to conclude their cross-country seasons after their exhausting collegiate seasons.
