National Cross Country Championships –– Toronto, Ontario,
November 29, 2003
TORONTO-- Alyson Kohlmeier placed 7th individually out
of a field of 153 junior girls (19 years and under) to lead her
Sarnia Athletics Southwest team to a closely fought 4th
place team finish at the recent Canada Cross-Country Championships
in Toronto. The overall team champions were the Regina Harriers
followed by the 2003 champions, the Ottawa Lions. Sarnia was edged
out for the team bronze medal by South Simcoe-Dufferin by a single
position, 67 to 68 points, in the combined score of each team’s top
4 runners. Kohlmeier was followed by Claire Percival (26th),
Kara Wark (40th) and Sarah Carr (44th). Marie
Louise Asselin placed a respectable 67th despite losing a
spiked shoe and spotting the field close to a minute over the 5km
rain drenched course. Sarnia ASW had previously been 1st,
1st, and most recently 2nd in the junior
girl’s category at nationals over the past three years. Injuries to
junior aged club members, Amy Kohlmeier (Notre Dame) and Jessica
Crate (Arizona State) presently in the NCAA, hurt the club but all
five members of this year’s team return for the 2004 Canada
Championships, in addition to a strong group of local up and comers.
