Ontario University Championships

(North York)

Several Sarnia-Lambton athletes competed at the Ontario University Athletics track and field championships at York University.

Cole Bloxam (Northern) was the gold medallist in the shot put for the University of Windsor with a personal best throw of 15.41m.  Carly Gill (St. Christopher) also was a gold medallist for the Lancers as a member of their 4 x 800m relay team.

Other area athletes scoring points for their schools were:

Dana Hislop (Northern) was a member of McMaster’s sixth place 4 x 400m relay team; Andrew Douglas (Northern) was a member of the Marauders fourth place 4 x 400m relay and fifth place 4 x 800m relay team; Windsor’s Justin Keating (Northern) was sixth in the 60m in a time of 6.98s;  Guelph’s Kevin Honig (Northern) finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 6.73m and seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 13.75m;  Mike Poaps (St. Clair) was a member of Western’s fourth place 4 x 800m team.

Windsor won the men’s division for the eleventh consecutive year and Guelph won the women’s division.  Many of these athletes will be competing at the Canadian University track and field championships at the University of Windsor on Mar 12 – 14.  Further information on this meet can be found at http://www.cisport.ca/e/championships/track/2009/index.cfm

Various American Universities

Derek Drouin (St. Patrick’s) competing for Indiana University finished second in the high jump at the Big Ten track and field championships with a jump of 2.18m which is his personal best.  The championship meet was held at Penn State University.

Marie-Louise Asselin (Northern) competing for West Virginia University finished third in the 3,000-meter event at the Big East track and field championships with a time of 9:22.05.  Her time was number 4 all-time for a WVU athlete.  The meet was held in New York.

Lydia Willemse (St. Christopher) competing for Florida State University finished fourth in the 3,000-metre event at the Atlantic Coast Conference track and field championships with a time of 9:32.24.  The meet was held at Virginia Tech University.

All three athletes have achieved the NCAA provisional standard and are waiting to see how they rank nationally for selection to the NCAA championship meet.
