Sarnia ASW Members Shine at Conference Championships
Jillian Drouin and Marie Louise Asselin
competed this past weekend at the Big East Conference Indoor Track and Field
Championships at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
Jillian Drouin, a graduate of Sarnia St.
Patrick’s High School and now a senior at Syracuse University, won the
pentathlon with an impressive score of 4099 points. Her score broke her own
Syracuse school record as well as the Armory Track open record and also
automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Jillian went on
to take second in the open high jump the following day with a jump of 1.80m.
After her record setting performance in the pentathlon and her open high jump
performance, Jillian earned the Big East women’s outstanding field performer of
the year.
Marie Louise Asselin, a graduate of Sarnia
Northern and now a sophomore at West Virginia University, also competed at the
2008 Big East Indoor Championships and proved that she is one of Canada’s best
distance runners. Marie Louise convincingly won the 3000m in a time of 9:20.56
and she followed the 3000m up with an excellent anchor leg of the Distance
Medley Relay, leading the West Virginia women to a win in that event. Because of
the performances, Marie Louise earned the Big East women’s outstanding track
performer of the year.
Andy Ysebaert, a graduate of Sarnia
Collegiate and now competing for Texas State University, finished fifth in the
shot put this past weekend at the Southland Conference Championships in Houston,
Texas. Andy set an indoor personal best with a throw of 15.92m. Andy was the
highest finisher in the shot put for Texas State and will now lead the Texas
State throwers into the NCAA outdoor season.
Jillian, Marie Louise and Andy are all
members of the Sarnia Athletics Southwest Track and Field club.
